Catalan coast of Girona; history and Mediterranean charm

6 August 2025

Catalan coast of Girona which is called Costa Brava, located in the northeast of Catalonia, stretches from Blanes to Portbou, on the French border. With more than 200 kilometers of coastline, it is a unique mosaic of hidden coves, fishing villages, cliffs and Mediterranean tradition.

A bit of history

The name “Costa Brava” was given in 1908 by journalist Ferran Agulló, who described this coastline as a rugged and wild place, full of natural beauty and its own character.

Over the centuries, the coast has witnessed Iberian, Greek and Roman civilizations. The remains of Empúries, for example, recall the arrival of the Greeks and Romans, who left a very important cultural and commercial legacy.

During the Middle Ages, walled towns like Tossa de Mar or Pals showed the need to defend themselves from pirates and invaders. Later, fishing and trade marked the seafaring character of the area.

In the 20th century, with the arrival of the first artists and travelers, including Salvador Dalí, who fell in love with Cadaqués and Portlligat, the area was consolidated as a first-rate tourist and cultural destination.

Nature and landscapes

The catalan coast of Girona is synonymous with contrasts; from wide beaches like Empuries to the hidden coves of Begur or Palafrugell. The Cap de Creus Natural Park offers a rugged and unique landscape in the entire Mediterranean, while the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà are a paradise for nature lovers and ornithologists.

People and tradition of the Costa Brava

The towns still retain their essence today. Cadaqués is one of the most iconic, with its white houses and the light that inspired Dalí. Tossa de Mar stands out for its walled old town, and inland towns such as Peratallada or Monells transport the visitor to medieval times.

Gastronomy and culture

The catalan coast of Girona is also renowned for its sea and mountain cuisine. From fish dishes to rice, to the avant-garde cuisine that revolutionised the world with Ferran Adrià’s El Bulli. Festivals, markets and popular traditions complete a vibrant cultural offer throughout the year.

And the best thing is that we have it very close. From Vol de Coloms, in just 1 hour, 1 hour and a half, we can reach the Costa Brava, and on days with good visibility we can even see part of it from the air.
