Romanesque monastery in Catalonia

31 January 2025

The Garrotxa region hides true architectural and historic buildings of Catalonia. One of them is the romanesque monastery of Sant Joan les Fonts located between lava flows.

A bit of history

The monastery was founded in 1079, when the viscounts of Besalú, Udalard Bernat de Milany i Ermessenda, ceded the church to the abbey of Sant Víctor of Marseille. From here, a Benedictine priory was established that remained active until the 19th century.

The religious building that we can visit today dates mainly from the 12th century and stands out for its Romanesque architecture. With a basilical plan of three naves, its apses decorated with Lombard arches are an outstanding example of this artistic style.

A spectacular environment

The romanesque monastery is located in a place surrounded by nature and is part of an itinerary that allows you to discover the volcanic geology of La Garrotxa. A few meters from the building you can follow the Ruta de les Tres Colades, a fascinating route through basalt formations originated by volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago.

In addition, very close to the monastery, you can admire the medieval bridge of Sant Joan les Fonts , a construction made of volcanic stone that crosses the Riudaura stream and adds even more charm to the landscape.

An essential visit

The romanesque monastery is a living testimony to the medieval history of Catalonia, combining architectural heritage, spirituality and an exceptional natural environment. Despite its transformations over the centuries, it remains a jewel of Catalan Romanesque and an essential point of interest for lovers of history and culture.
