The town of Santa Pau in La Garrotxa

Santa Pau in La Garrotxa Santa Pau is a medieval town interesting for its natural, cultural and gastronomic heritage.

Santa Pau transports us to the Middle Ages. The old town, declared a cultural asset of national interest, is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets that lead to the heart of the town, the main square. This porticoed square, also known as Plaça dels Arcs, is surrounded by stone houses and offers an atmosphere that seems to have been frozen in time.

Dominating the landscape of the square, stands the castle of Santa Pau, a 13th century fortress. The castle is at a very important moment, as the city council wants to acquire the property in order to renovate it and create a museum. Thanks to the contribution of money from the whole population this historical heritage will be preserved.

Next to it, we find the church of the 16th century, in gothic style, although the whole last part of the church is more Baroque.

One of the great attractions of Santa Pau are the volcanoes. From the village, it is easy to access some of the hiking routes. Such as the one that leads to Volcà de Santa Margarida, with an emblematic church inside the crater, or to Croscat that offers a spectacular view of its structure geological

A visit to Santa Pau would not be complete without tasting its local gastronomy. The town is famous for Santa Pau beans, a variety of small bean grown in the volcanic area. The land where it is planted makes that the beans have a thinnest skin and their flesh is much softer and creamier than those planted in other areas.
